Dead Space: Extraction
Developed by: EA
For:
Nintendo Wii

Being called the “9K-unit disaster,” Dead Space: Extraction does a good deal of things right as a Mature rated Wii game with some fun co-op elements…but nothing can help this game from being labeled for what it truly is: an overpriced light-gun game.

Mind you, this isn’t a bad light gun game. In fact, it’s a really good light gun game. Coined as a “first person narrative” game, Extraction has you living the events before the first Dead Space. Previous exposure to the first Dead Space isn’t required, but those who enjoyed the last game will get more out of the prequel.

Let’s get the good out of the way: the action is frantic, exciting and very graphic and gory. Having characters explode in blood, curse multiple times and screech in terror on the Wii has its own kind of perverse excitement. Throughout the 4 – 7 hours you’ll spend playing the game, there are many exciting and shocking moments.

The dismemberment aspect of the original Dead Space is in full effect and makes the firefights even more intense, since you can’t simply shoot someone’s head off and be done with them. Grabbing items in the game is also very easy and satifying, especially when you find an elusive clip of ammo to finally finish off a very difficult boss.

That being said, the dialogue and characters in this game are relatively weak. Sure, they are cookie-cutter protagonists that do little than accentuate the terror you’ll be going through in the game, but it still does get very grating to hear some of the horrible, cheezy dialogue spewed out by these characters.

And let’s be honest: It’s a light gun game. In its very nature, it’s a highly simplistic game and no matter how you twist it, replayability will be low and its value will be even lower.

That is why, despite its thrilling battles and at times intense scares, I can’t recommend anyone buying this game for $50. As much as EA should be applauded for supporting this game on the Wii, asking for anything more than $30 seems to be overpriced.
