It’s His God Damn Career! – Host Garnett Lee becomes editorial director for Gamefly Media
Joystiq reports that 1up Editor and host of the flagship 1up Podcast Listen Up! Garnett Lee has been named Editorial Director of Gamefly Media, which includes Shacknews, which Gamefly acquired during the year.
Garnett Lee was one of the few surviving members of the 1up staff after Ziff Davis media sold 1up to UGO and dissolved EGM, at which more than half of the original staff was let go. After doing one final 1up Yours in January, the show was labeled Listen Up! with John Davison and David Ellis co-hosting.
Nothing has been said as to the status of Listen Up! and when Garnett’s last broadcast day will be.
Brad’s Take: Like every gaming nerd growing up in the mid-90’s, Electronic Gaming Monthly was the holy grail of gamerdom. 1UP, it’s extension, saught to bring a whole new type of media to gaming coverage, which included podcasting, which 1UP was famous for with it’s podcasts GFW Radio and 1Up Yours.
Then, at the beginning of this year, 1UP got hit hard with a selling of the name to UGO and the dissolvation of most of its editorial staff. It was hard to watch as well, since most of the shows that come out of 1UP afterwards were a shadow of its former self, which included (but not nearly as severely) the Listen Up! podcast, the successor to the mega popular and beloved 1UP Yours podcast.
Now, with the final piece of the 1UP Yours legacy leaving the site for good, it brings up a very interesting question: What will happen with 1UP Radio? Losing the 1UP Show guys to the merger (who then created the mega popular and outstanding Co-Op) was a huge blow, now losing its flagship host and personality?
Those are some awfully huge shoes for David Ellis to fill…

“1up staff after Ziff Davis media sold 1up and EGM to UGO”
EGM was never sold to UGO.com and was never part of the deal. That is factually inaccurate.
Cheers.
Kareem – Its says Ziff Davis Media sold 1UP to UGO and dissolved EGM. Read it…ZDM did both of these. Factually correct.
