Take This Rumor For A Ride: Tatsunoko vs. Capcom coming to the States
Advance copies and scans of the next Nintendo Power state that the popular Japanese import fighter Tatsunoko vs. Capcom for the Nintendo Wii. For the past year, Capcom has quoted numerous times that they are doing everything in their power to bring this fighter to the states.
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is a fighting game in the vein of most of Capcom’s VS. titles, where a load of Capcom’s favorite characters go up against the characters made by the Japanese animation studios Tatsunoko Production. The most popular property to come to the States from Tatsunoko was Casshern, a 2003 animated film that was released 4 years later in the States.
Brad’s Take: It sounds like Nintendo wanted some Capcom fighting love after all. After being jilted by Capcom with no Street Fighter IV (hell, PC is getting the game), enough wheeling and dealing was done to capture all of the properties from Tatsunoko to let this game come stateside.
The real question is…will it be successful? As much as I love the versus series, I only liked them because of the things it combined: My love of comics and my love of Street Fighter. I can comfortably say I have NO clue (aside from Casshern) what any of these characters are. Nor does most of America and American fighting game fans, most of which aren’t on the Wii. So, again, how will this game sell?
[update: I just found out that this studio did Speed Racer, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Macross, Robotech and other anime I simply never watched. So I was wrong...]
Bryan’s Take: Like the idea that this game is coming to the states. I watched from youtube fights awhile back when the Marvel vs Capcom 2 rumor was spreading like wildfire for the PSN and XLA. The games is simular to other Capcom vs. [Other] game titles but has something else to it that I can’t place my finger on… hmmm
In any case, this might be a good move for Nintendo to get a fighting video game onto the Wii but to be honest, the console isn’t made for that genre of gaming. Even those hardcore Capcom vs. Tatsunoko probably don’t have a Wii console to play it on. Will some of them buy a Wii for it, maybe but if they were smart, they wouldn’t waste their money right now on a sixth generation console (selling as a seventh generation console).
