Apple to buy EA? Am I seeing double?

Apparently, there is chatter over the possibility that EA will be taken over by Apple. This started by a rumor on Wall Street, followed by a set of analysts saying it’s a viable possibility. Then that was followed by other analysts, like Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan, saying that will never happen because it isn’t the best option for Apple at this time.

A lot of the gaming sites have been reluctant to actually comment or cement that if this is, indeed a possibility.

Brad’s Take: At first, I was also reluctant to even post this story, since it seems kind of unviable.

Then again, we’ve heard rumors in the past that Apple was looking to take a bite out of the gaming market. A lot of people speculated that was not going to happen since Apple couldn’t break into such an already highly competitive market. Enter the iPhone and how it’s trouncing the PSP in game sales.

The other rumor that came about the past few years was the one of the big 3 third party companies may actually get into the console making business. Again, a lot of people threw this out, saying that these companies would make tons more just making 3rd party games.

Why do I mention this? Well, many are speculating that if Sony doesn’t get an amazing amount of sales in the next 5 years for the PS3, it may have to sell off its Playstation branding. Enter Apple, who may swoop in to take that branding and tech. With Apple already heavy on the hardware side, all they would need is a company with tons of experience making games with various hardware.

That’s right, Enter Electronic Arts.

Now, this is also predicating on the fact that OnLive may be out by the time all of this happens, but that’s also vaporware for the time being.

All in all, it’s still speculation, but with this coming out a month before E3…could this possibly be a huge announcement on E3? Bryan, your take?
